A Classic Magic Moment

It was 20 years ago yesterday that Magic Johnson announced he was retiring from basketball because of HIV. And yesterday the internet showed up in a big way, check the Magic Johnson tag on Tumblr for the great sentiment put forth by the community.

I read through quite a few articles yesterday, one of best being Marc Stein’s look back on the historic event. Stein brings to light a common thread in almost all of these articles. Even though Magic Johnson was delivering what many believed to be a death sentence he was still Magic. Calm, cool and in control. Reporters in the audience cried and yet Magic was the one reassuring them. It reminded me of a passage from Bird and Magic’s When the Game Was Ours. Bird talked about the night he received the news about Magic.

“Magic, I’m so sorry,” Bird said.

“No, it’s going to be all right,” Magic said. “I have to take some medication and do some different stuff but I’m going to fight this thing.”

The two superstars talked briefly. If Johnson was reeling from his diagnosis, he adeptly concealed it.

“So,” Magic said, “how are the Celtics looking?”

Bird was momentarily speechless.

“Ah, hell,” he replied. “We’ll probably kick your ass.”

When Bird hung up the phone, he turned to Dinah and reported, “He was trying to cheer me up.”

Joe Flacco has been murdered locally and criticized nationally. The scrutiny is far from baseless but the intensity is surprising. On Sunday night Flacco made another crucial mistake and lost a fumble in Heinz Field. Instead of being mentally taken out of the game he led the Ravens on a game winning 92-yard touchdown drive in the final two minutes of play — a drive that would have made Johnny U proud. The questions are far from answered and we all know the NFL is week to week. If Flacco doesn’t follow this up with a strong performance in Seattle than the same demons come rushing back. But for now I’d like to have a toast for the Flacco haters.
